Term 1 Science

This term for Science we have been learning all about Chemical Science! This is the science of what things are made of, how they are mixed and how they react (change). We have also been investigating that things on the earth can be known as solids, liquids and gases.

Yesterday we conducted an experiment to see what happened when we froze water, milk and tea. We discovered that these liquids turn into solids because we added a very cold temperature.

Next, we had to predict which ice block would melt the fastest. We had a lot of different answers in class, but we found that the water ice block melted the fastest only taking 12 minutes! We realised that when we added heat to a solid like ice it then melted to become a liquid again. This is known as a physical change and one that is reversible!

To follow up on this experiment at home, you may wish to conduct your own melting and freezing experiments! Or you could ask us some questions to help build our knowledge such as:
Can you think of any other things that can melt?
What causes things to turn from a liquid to a solid?
What causes things to turn from a solid to a liquid?
What is a reversible or irreversible change?
