Sight Word Booklets and Homework Clarification
Thank you for supporting our current homework program. We
would just like to clarify how to correctly use the Sight Words Books. These
books are sent home with the purpose of reading the words and being able to recognise
them straight away.
- Children
are expected to recognise 200 sight words by the end Year One.
- All
children have received a Sight Word Booklet in their Practice Folders.
- The
Sight Word Booklet needs to be returned in the Practice Time Folder every
Monday, as it is monitored.
- Once
the children receive five ticks for a word, they colour in the word. They
must only receive a tick if they can instantly recall the word.
- We
would ideally like 5 words to be done per week. If this is too easy a
maximum of one whole page can be done per week but no more. If by the end
of the week your child has yet to achieve all of the words on that page,
please continue to work on those words and don’t move forward. These books
are for your child to work through at their own pace. There is no rush!
- If your child knows the words already, please get them to put the words in sentences or even spell the word before they can get a tick. We often find that children know the words but cannot use them in context.
To ease the students into our homework program, for the next
few weeks they will only have reading and sight words. There will be no
spelling or practice sheet coming home until the end of the term.
We hope this clarifies any questions you may have.
Thank you for your ongoing support,
Miss Mills and Mrs Szczepanik
